El Garzon is a picturesque hotel with a charming restaurant in the countryside village of Garzon, just a 45 min drive northeast from Punta del Este. The owner is no other than celebrated Argentine Chef Francis Mallman who owns several restaurants in Argentina and even one in New York. The owner may not always be around but he leaves the reins on the very capable hands of Chef Norbert Piattoni who uses Mallman’s grilling on open fire over infiernillos technique. Roaster fillet mignon, braised rib-eye with roasted vegetables in chimichurri sauce, and wine braised pumpkin and chicken ravioli are examples of delicious offerings.
The dining room at El Garzon is very rustic and gets romantic in the evenings and that most visitors opt to stay in the 5 room rustic country inn. Calling ahead of time to make reservations would be best and remember to bring cash as they do not accept credit card transactions.
Tip how to find the restaurant: On the roundabout just before entering the town, you take the Sains Martinez road towards the Route 9. When you reach the route 9 you cross it remaining on the same road you were going, following our signs to the town of Garzon.

Marismo in the Jose Ignacio peninsula resort, just 40 km out of Punta del Este, is a one of a kind restaurant that is lit only by bonfires, candle light, and the stars above. The restaurant that has no roof or walls, surrounded by pine trees, with the bare sand as flooring, has a mystifying and lively ambiance having live DJ entertainment. The menu is comprised of wood fire grilled scrumptious local fare offerings, with dishes like their famous slow braised lamb specialty, grilled calamari seasoned with olive oil and lemon, and roast beef on risotto. An impressive wine list is also on offer.
Marismo is only open during peak season night times (November – March), from 6pm ‘til midnight. Restoran Lajau is a lovely eatery in the seaside village of La Pedrera, just an hour away by car traveling east from Punta del Este. The picturesque restaurant has several rooms, a terrace and lush courtyard overlooking the beach.
The patio with hydrangeas, ceibos, and palm trees is a good spot for afternoon people watching while waiting for the sun to set on the Atlantic. Rex Diner in La Barra is a trendy eatery and takeway that is known for having the best Chivitos (sandwiches Uruguay -style) in town. What’s great is it is open all hours of the day for whoever has a hankering for tasty snacks, great desserts, and thirst quenching refreshments. The diner has plenty of outdoor seating in the front patio but the terrace in the back has better views overlooking the ocean.
The pleasantly decorated air-conditioned indoor dining area with a bar provides ample seating in warmer months as well. The most recommended menu item is the national chivito sandwich made from very thinly sliced 5 types of proteins – Churrasco beef, pancetta, ham, fillet mignon, and fried egg with melted provalone cheese, lettuce, olives, and drizzled with a special mayonnaise sauce and a side of fries.
