The French regions of Alsace and Lorraine have a rich and colourful history, manily because it has been governed and fought over by the Germans and the French for three and a half centuries that is why the region has a combination of both influences when it comes to architecture, tradition, language, and cuisine. Alsace in the easternmost corner of the country is one of the smallest regions in France but it is quite significant having the city of Strasbourgh, which is also the seat of the European Parliament. Must see places in Alsace include medieval structures, contemporary art museum, half timbered Franco-Germanic villages, stork’s nests, while outdoor activities like mountain biking, hiking, and camping are in stored for travelers. Lorraine is where the quiche originatred from and it is also the birth place of the legendary figure - Joan of Arc. It is also famous for its gothic cathedral in Metz, picturesque medieval villages, and nouveau architecture in Metz.
Alsace and Lorraine are also known for great cuisine having many Michelin Star rated restaurants, quaint cafés, and pubs so sampilng the original quiche recipe, souffles, tarts, and clafoutis is a must do when visiting these regions. The famous Moselle wines, flowery white wines, and breweries in Alsace are also a must try. The best time to visit Alsace and Lorraine is from spring time to autumn. The regions start to come alive with greenery and the scent of the budding grape flowers in springtim while the regions are vibrant with summertime festivities including the famous burning of three pine trees by late June in Thann, the wine fair within the first two weeks in August in Colmar (capital of Alsace), and the mid August flower carnival festival in Selestat. The wintertime also gets festive with the celebration of the Germanic Christmas fair in Strasbourg. Autumn brings a symhony of natural colours and grape harvest season. Touring around the region by use of public transportation is easy but you would be able to cover more ground by car. There are also many bicycle rental spots around the region and going on boating tours by the canals is also a great way to experience Alsace and Lorraine.
