CARMEL - the best insider tips for vacation, holiday & travel

Carmel originally had a reputation as an artistic retreat and the bohemian flavor of the resort survives in the many art galleries and shops that line Main Street. However, Carmel is also very up market and the residents are usually either particularly wealthy or members of the bourgeoisie. The town is famous for its particularly strict prohibition of advertising hoardings, neon signs and take away food stalls. Locals have to collect their mail and the houses aren’t numbered, even litter bins and public phones are discreetly disguised so they don’t upset the picture perfect townscapes.

Carmel offers the very best of restaurants, boutique hotels and golf courses all of which are welcoming to visitors and the best time to go is during the warm summer months, although there is a consistent problem with fog, it can roll it at any time of the year.

Although Carmel is very near to San Francisco and attracts many day trippers from the city unless you are an artist or a shopaholic, Carmel doesn’t have much to offer; Monterey is much more interesting and is only about 5 miles away.
