Ministry of Crab in Colombo is a newly opened stylish seafood restaurant situated in the beautifully restored 4 century old Dutch Hospital. They have retained much of the old hospital’s charm with tiled floors, high ceilings, and colour theme of orange and black interiors. The owners are cricketers Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, plus restaurateur Dharshan Munida of Nuhonbashi Japanese restaurant fame. There are all kinds of seafood like squid, calamari, black tiger prawns, cuttlefish, and so much more but their Sri Lankan mud crabs specialties are of course the highlights of the menu. Everything is guaranteed fresh, there’s even a crab tank and diners can see the crawlers being fished out of their temporary homes before they are taken into the open kitchen and prepared into sumptuous dishes. Dharshan also emphasizes that they carefully select locally sourced vegetables and even make their own sauces to guarantee freshness and flavour. Diners are given bibs so they can enjoy digging into the meaty crabs without worrying about clothes stains.

Ministry of crab is open from 6pm – 11pm on weekdays, noon until 4pm for lunch and 6pm – 11pm for dinner on weekends. Make sure to call days in advance if you want to be able to secure a booking.
Note: closed on Pova days; 6th Dec, 4th Jan, 3rd Feb, 5th Mar, 3rd April, 3rd May, 2nd June, 1st July

"The Gallery Cafe"  is situated in the center of the city of Colombo yet it remains a beautiful quiet haven; enter the building down a paved driveway with temple trees and large urns along each side; a view across a long pond filled with striking purple nil manel, Sri Lanka's national flower, continues through the latticed doors towards a giant cement urn, which sits at the boundary wall of the cafe; international food is served in the semi-alfresco courtyard; see and to be seen; an Art Gallery is situated at the entrance to the Café; exhibitions display works of mostly local artists, changing every three weeks; on the side of this courtyard is "The Gallery Shop" and "The Paradise Road Studio House" - perfect for gifts like the Sri Lankan Dilmah tea "t"; for an even more upscale international dinner go to "Tintangel" (65 Rosmead Pl, Col 7, +94 11 460 2122) at "Tintagel Hotel" (former residency of the Sri Lankan prime minister); it is located in Colombo's diplomatic district; intimate dinner in a lovely courtyard
