HEBRIDES - the best insider tips for vacation, holiday & travel
The Isle of Harris, also known as the Outer Hebridean chain of islands in Scotland is known for the stunning scenery, breathtaking landscape, ancient archeology, abundant flora and fauna, and rich Gaelic and Norse traditions. One of the most famous tourist hotspot in Harris is Luskentyre Sands (Traigh Losgaintir Beach voted as the most finest beach in the UK) on the west coast which is infamous for miles of stunning white sand beach, green-blue waters, amazing sand dunes, and Taransay (Castaway show setting) where people can go kitesurfing and watch dolphins dancing in the waters. Donald John McKay’s famous tweed shop is also based in Luskentyre. Other attractions in Harris include the historic capital – Tarbert, the old whaling station at Bunavoneandar, the eagle observatory, and Amhuinnsuidhe Castle to name a few. There is a wealth of outdoor activities like mountain biking, fishing, kayaking, wind karting, kitesurfing, canoeing, sailing, and so much more.
The Isle of Harris is easily accessible by plane from Glasgow, Edinburgh, or Inverness to Stornoway Airport which is a 90 min drive away. There are also regular ferry schedules from the Isle of Sky (UIG) to Tarbert and Levenburgh (40 minutes). The best time to visit the Isle of Harris is during the months of Feb-Mar when there are clearer skies, starry nights, sunny days, and when the gorgeous spring flowers are in bloom.
