The ancient city of Hoi An in Vietnam is a sight to behold with its very colourful history and vibrant culture. Its history dates back to more than 2,000 years ago when it was once a quiet fishing town until it became the centre for spice trade for the Cham Kingdom in the 7th until the 10th Century. Hoi An then became a key international port in the 16th and 19th Century and was known to foreigners as Fairo. The influences of various cultures can be seen around the city, especially its UNESCO Heritage Site in Old Town Hoi An, where the slow steady pace of old life still seems to exists because cars cannot enter the narrow streets. Tourists may hire a bicycle or take a leisurely stroll to enjoy the architectural scenery and check out various shops of mostly silk clothing stores, souvenir shops, restaurants, bars and art galleries. Many of the famous attractions in Hoi An, like the Japanese covered bridge, Guan Yin Temple, Fukian assembly hall, Cuan Qong Temple, French colonial houses, Tran ancestral home, and many museums can also be found in Old Town Hoi An.
