ILHA GRANDE - the best insider tips for vacation, holiday & travel
Ilha Grande is one of the most stunning coastal islands of Brazil, just 120 km away from Rio de Janeiro. The area is dubbed as the “Caribbean of Brazil” because of the abundance of its natural wonders having more than 350 islands and islets, over a hundred beaches, more than 50 waterfalls, the Mata Atlantica rainforests, and tranquil rivers and mystifying caves to boot. Tourists can go for ecological trekking explorations and even go camping in the forest, loves can go on a romantic Brazilian Schooner or “escunas” sunset boat rides, and surfing enthusiasts can ride the waves at Santo Antonio, Aventureiro, or Lopes Mendes beaches. Visiting Lazareto prison ruins, climbing the 990 metre peak of Pico do Papagayo, kayaking, snorkeling, diving, mountain biking, fishing, and enjoying beachside massages are also some of the must do’s when at Ilha Grande.
Ilha Grande enjoys pleasant weather most times of the year being inside the Tropic of Capricorn but heavy rains may occur from Jan-Feb. There are a few ways to get to the Ilha Grande but the easiest route from Rio de Janeiro is by getting to the ports of Angara dos Reis or Mangaratiba where you can catch a 1-1 and a half hour ferry ride to the island’s main town of Abraao. Remember to bring enough money in local currency because shops, restaurants, and bars on the island mostly only accept cash payments.
