Interlaken is the capital of the Swiss Bernese Oberland and is a very popular tourist region in Switzerland primarily because it is easily accessible from the Swiss capital of Berne (only 90 minutes away). The town lies between two lakes – Lake Brienz and Lake Thun and is surrounded by three majestic mountains – Monch, Eiger, and Jungfrau, offering numerous opportunities for exhilarating outdoor activities.
The picturesque town of Interlaken is the perfect base camp for seeing crystal clear lakes, wonderful falls, radiant streams, and majestic peaks. Summer activities include paragliding, had gliding, sky diving, camping, bungee jumping, river rafting, hiking on numerous trails, going on the historic paddle steamer lake cruise and exploring the surrounding areas with the extensive network of trains going to the Jungfrau region that depart from town. In the wintertime, Interlaken is ideal for enjoying nearby ski resorts in Axalp-Brienz, Beatenberg, and Jungfrau and there are even daily bus transfers going to Murren and Kleine Scheidegg ski areas. There are also many cable cars like the Harder Kulm that leads to a peak with a great vantage point of Jungfrau region. Must visit places include the Alpine wild animal park and garden that has more than 500 species of plants, the revolving restaurant of Piz Glora, the Hemwehfluh funicular, the Jungfrau Museum in Unterseen, and the Saint Beatus Caves that has impressive stalagmites and limestone formations. The old Monastery, the Kursaal, and the hotel Victoria-Jungfrau are Swiss heritage sites that are must visit places for architectural enthusiasts. The famous Hoheweg promenade is a charming main street lined up with various cafés, restaurants, and shops ideal for souvenir shopping.
