This Arctic highlands of Northern Norway aptly named Guovdageaidnu or Kautokeino, is located “half way” between two cultural migrating points – Sami and Norwegian. The largest municipality in Norway, eighty-five percent of Kautokeino’s population comprise of Sami people, making it the geographic center of Northern Sapmi. Accessibility is not a problem, as there are two airports nearby: the Alta and Enontekio Airports.
Get busy with and explore the many famous tourist attractions in the city – Alta Museum, Tirpitz Museum, Alta Church, Alta Canyon, Alta Dam, Rock Art of Alta, Hetta Huskies, Glod Adventures & Expedition, and the Holmen Hundesenter tours. Due to its arctic location, two natural phenomena are also famous attractions here: the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights during dry arctic winter nights and the Midnight Sun during summer. Kautokeino is also the home of the popular Juhl’s Silver Gallery, known for its high quality pearls in Lapland. They also create Sami jewelries for use in traditional Sami weddings.
Temperature during summer ranges from 10°C to 25°C, with the warmest temperature recorded at 34.3°C on June 23, 1920. Winter begins from mid-October to mid-May, with a yearly average temperature of -2.7°C. Hard winter is experienced around December-February, where temperature can fall as low as -45°C beyond.
