KOH SAMET - the best insider tips for vacation, holiday & travel
Ko Samet, also known as Koh Samed, is a T-shaped small island in Southern Thailand’s Rayong Province that is known for its white powdery sand beaches, clear blue waters, and beautiful coral reefs. The Ban Phe pier where one can get a 20 minute ferry ride going to the island is within easy reach of Pattaya and Bangkok (200 km or 2 hours drive) making it a popular weekend getaway spot for locals and tourists. Tourists and locals would have to pay an island entry fee since it was declared as a National Park in 1981 so make sure to bring some cash or inquire with your hotel or resort if the park fee is already included.
Most beaches on Ko Samet are on the eastern side. Diamond Beach (Hat Sai Kaew) and Ao Wong Deuan are the biggest and most popular out of many beaches where there are a good number of seafront shops, restaurants, and bars. Ao Hin Khok and Hat Sai Kaew beaches are also famous for sunset fire twirling shows. The laidback lifestyle and atmosphere on the island is perfect for relaxation and enjoying barbecues (satay) with cocktails by the breezy beaches.
There are also exciting activities like catamaran sailing, jet skiing, fishing, parasailing, going on banana boat rides, wind surfing, diving, snorkeling, and exploring the island via rented mountain bikes or ATV/motorbikes.
Like the rest of the Thailand, the island has a tropical climate but has significantly less rainfall so tourists and locals are abundant throughout the year. The best time to visit Ko Samet is during the cooler months of Dec-May.
