Situated on the trendy Jinxian Road in Luwan District, bijou Lan Xin Restaurant is barely distinguishable among the ramshackle shop fronts and trendy nail bars. The unimpressive white facade and thickset pleated curtains do little to herald the presence of this homely Shanghainese eatery, which has garnered an excellent reputation for its pork and bamboo soup, Tanc Cu Ying Si (pickled vegetables with black fungus) and braised duck. More akin to a traditional Shanghainese family diner than a restaurant, Lan Xin is small, narrow and barren, save for the cheerfulness of its yellow walls and a few scattered nicknacks. Booking a day or two in advance is advisable since Lan Xin only has 5 tables and a capacity for about 18-20 people – at a squeeze.
Lan Xin specialises in traditional Shanghainese cuisine that in all honesty, can be found anywhere. The difference here is that most dishes stay true to the traditional recipe, and are cooked using fresh, organic ingredients sourced locally. Hong Shao Rou is a popular, yet simple dish of fatty pork cuts in a sweet, dark red marinade, enhanced by the sweetness braised green peppers. Jiang Ya (braised duck leg) is equally sweet, yet benefits from the addition of soy sauce which gives it that little extra bite. The hand-printed menu doesn't include pictures, and nor do the staff speak English, so if you are looking for something vegetarian, you're best bet is to enlist the help of a fellow diner – they're usually more than willing to impart a few recommendations!
