Le Vietnam St. Barthelemy
Le Vietnam - review by Nicole Allmann
Style: Romantic Asian Priest House
, Rue Oscar II , Gustavia
Phone: +59 05 90 27 81 37
Price: A la carte from around $30 per head
A breath of fresh air on an island obsessed with French-Caribbean fusion, the cheery Vietnamese eatery down on Rue Oscar II promises no end of epicurean delights. Set within an old Swedish priest house overlooking the yacht-strewn harbour, the renovated cottage provides a humble, yet romantic setting for an evening of boundless enjoyment. As you'd expect of an archaic Asian restaurant, the décor is atypically oriental. The crisp white and yellow theme is broken up with intricate woven tapestries and exuberant paper lanterns, while jovial Chinese wooden icons add a distinctively personal touch. Lit by table lanterns and twinkling lights, the outdoor terrace is the ideal place to take in the harbour with a cold Asian beer.
Since opening in 1989, Le Vietnam (run by Chief Tuyen and his wife Angelique) has set a benchmark for Asian cuisine that even the pedigree chefs find hard to beat. Combining longtime Chinese favourites (such as pork dumplings and Peking duck) with more inspired dishes like Sautéed Chicken Curry with Coconut, Le Vietnam presents a comprehensive a la carte menu at surprisingly reasonable rates. Indulge yourself with a bowl of Mi Xao Tom Hum (noodles sautéed with lobster) and Saigonese Shrimp, followed by Lemon or Passion-fruit Sorbet. - they're the oldies that keep people coming back!
Opening Hours: Lunch from 12am to 2pm. Dinner from 6pm to 10:30pm. Closed on Tuesday (low season) and on Sunday for lunch
