MONTENEGRO - the best insider tips for vacation, holiday & travel
On the Balkan Peninsula, Montenegro isn’t short of inspiring attractions and beautiful places to visit. The beaches are stunning and many are relatively undiscovered, Dobrec and Jaz beaches are both quiet and well worth a visit, the blue grotto (Plava Spilja) is at Lustica beach and is still one of the best kept secrets of the natural world.
Historic and picturesque towns can be found all along the Peninsula, the most famous is Budva which enjoyed a visit from Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
Other towns that are worth a look around include Milocer which was originally founded by the Yugoslav royal family and Buljarica which is truly beautiful, however it is also very high on the holiday resort developers list so you will need to get there quite quickly. There is plenty for more energetic travellers as well, Durmitor national park is home to the largest canyon in Europe, Snake Lake and River Tara are all famous for eco-tourism and adventure holidays and Vucije offers some excellent skiing for those who visit in the winter months. Culture vultures will want to visit the world heritage site of Kotor which is one of the area’s most historic towns and shows a strong Venetian influence. The beach in Kotor is also lovely and boats can be taken to the nearby islands of Sveti Djordje and Gospa od Skrpjela from the harbour. Turkish influences can be found in the old town at Podgorica and provide an insight into the interesting and diverse history of the area.
The old Montenegrian capital of Cetinje is still considered by locals to be the true heart of the area and they are incredible proud of the town which also has enormous spiritual significance to them. Lovers of food and drink will want to visit Njegusi which takes the traditions of Montenegrin cuisine to a new level; the area also has many traditional farms producing local cheeses and prosciutto. Niksic produces a local beer which is rumoured to be amongst the best in the world.More modern pursuits can also be found in the Balkans; there is a vibrant nightlife which includes great restaurants, bars, café bars and boutique and luxury hotels in most of the larger towns.
Kotor has a large yacht club and Montenegro’s first golf club is now open at Club Javorje. Combined with a warm welcome from locals all over the area, Montenegro has everything a traveller could want.
