Shin Hinomoto, known as Andy’s Fish restaurant to foreigners, is a family owned traditional Izakaya that has been around for generations. Englishman Andy married into the family and has been managing the restaurant since so the eatery became a bit of an expat hangout. The eatery serves the freshest seafood sourced from Tsukiji market each day. Locals and foreigners flock to this eatery because of their flavourful assortment of sashimi, juicy jumbo prawns, stuffed chicken wings, and special catch of the day served in generous portions.

Andy’s Fish gets really busy and a bit crowded especially on weekends so make sure to book ahead (accepts booking from 4 pm onwards). They are open daily, except on Sundays, from 5 pm until midnight.

Sukiyabashi Jiro is a must visit sushi institution in Tokyo. It is quite challenging to get a booking so call at least 5 weeks in advance. US President Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and other dignitaries dined at the Ginza branch of this simple yet fabulous 3 Star Michelin Rated sushi restaurant in early April 2014. The Ginza branch can accommodate up to 35 people at a time but the Honten branch which is managed by the owner’s son can accommodate only up to 15 people. The ambiance is quite somber and the décor is simple traditional Japanese but people come here mainly for the food and not for the ambiance, especially because the eatery was featured on a documentary. Most of the servers only speak the local language so best learn a few Japanese phrases before you go. Diners will surely enjoy 88 year old Chef Jiro Ono’s out of this world sushi creations since he has been a sushi master for most of his lifetime. Get ready to savour more than 20 sushi courses from their tasting menu with dishes like flounder, squid, abalone, mackerel, uni, and scallop sushi. Local beers and sake make up the drink list.

Sukiyabashi Jiro is open on weekdays for lunch from 11:30 am until 2 pm, and for dinner from 5:30 –8:30 pm. They are closed on public holidays, Saturday evenings, Sundays, mid-August and on public holidays.

Eating okonomiyaki (known to foreigners as Japanese pancake or Japanese pizza) at the Monja Street Tukushiya restaurant is a must try experience when in Tokyo. The bustling street with plenty of eateries is easily accessed via the Yurakucho and Oedo subway lines. Head to the end of the street and keep an eye out for the restaurant that has black and yellow curtains.

The name of the dish means “things I liked to be cooked” gives a vague idea of what ingredients it may have but it commonly has several ingredients like noodles, ham, cabbage, pork, kimchi, and tarako (caviar) mixed in with an egg based batter and cooked to a golden brown pancake consistency on top of a grill right in front of diners. A mixture of Kyupie mayo and sweet sauce is slathered on top to enhance the flavours. There are several kinds of okonomiyakis at Tsukushiya; the special modern yaki that has soba noodles, fried egg, and bacon added to the batter is highly recommended.
