In Verona, simplicity is interpreted as meaning traditional and unpretentious - both discernible qualities of the antiquated Al Pompiere. Opened sometime during the 1920's, it's one of the oldest continuously operated restaurants in Verona, with a sterling reputation for excellent hospitality, an extensive wine menu and one of the largest cured meat selections of any restaurant in the Veneto region. Trattoria al Pompiere is synonymous with  traditional Veronese cuisine, namely its vast salumi platters and hearty pasta dishes. Specialties include bigoli con le sarde (spaghetti with sardines), salted cod – Vicenza style, or the controversial horse meat stew with polenta, served with generous hunks of garlic and herb bread.
Cosy lighting, low slung beams and vintage photographs convey the unique heritage of the former fireman's tavern, which up until the 1980's, was relatively overlooked by tourists. Today, it serves as a useful meeting point for courting couples en route to the opera, as well as natives seeking a relaxed evening of jazz music and camaraderie. It has the tendency to fill up quickly, therefore reserving a table up to 48 hours in advance is generally recommended.

With its quaint, white-washed facade and creeping vines, Ristorante Greppia looks just like any other privately owned eatery in the city. But, step across the threshold of this unique restaurant, located just off Verona's main pedestrian zone, and you'll discover an elegant venue steeped in nearly 400 years of history. Ristorante Greppia opened in 1975 within a former 17th Century stable block of the famed Queen of Hungary Hotel. Monolithic columns of red marble, rescued from the main building, were installed to support the sweeping arches and crumbling walls, creating a Romanesque extension to the flagstone courtyard patio and an ambient setting for one of Verona's favourite traditional restaurants.
Guests are invited to experience the “pure tastes of Verona” via the comprehensive appetizer menu, which boasts a diverse selection of cured meats (such as Zibello Ham), paired with excellent wines chosen by your personal sommelier. Mantuan influences are particularly prominent amongst the Primi offerings, which include Pumpkin The Valance (seasoned pumpkin ravioli) and earthy Fettucine al Tartufo, served with seasonal Black or Winter Truffle. Be sure to save enough room for dessert - Creme Caramel Panna Cotta is the ultimate Veronese indulgence!

Opened in August 2006 by native restaurateur Elia Rizzo, the lofty I Masenini represented a departure from the ubiquitous Veronese trattorias of old. Merging traditional design with clean lines and a distinctly unique open-plan layout, he sought to engage patrons with a floor show that showcases the throbbing heart of a traditional trattoria – the kitchen. The dining room is exceptionally spacious, lit by chandeliers and flanked by vast cabinets of Valpolicella,  Amarone and Bardolino. Enjoying a coveted situation on the beatific Via Roma, I Masenini affords stunning views of the nearby Castelvecchio fortress and adjacent museum, designed by Carlo Scarpa.

Having been raised in a traditional Osteria owned by his parents, Elia Rizzo understands that the majority of his clientèle are likely to be fly-by-night travelers seeking uncomplicated food, excellent wine and a romantic atmosphere in keeping with the city's reputation. Primi options include Veronese favourites, such as Bigoli Pasta with Cheese, Fennel and Bread and Warm Pasta and Bean Soup. You might also like to sample the Maccheroni Pasta with Veal and Sweet Tomato Ragout - said to be the best in Verona. Seconds range from Shanks of Piglet or Lamb, to Fiorentine Steak and Guinea Fowl in a blueberry and Moscato reduction - best enjoyed with a hearty red, recommended by your own waiter.
