Astro Cafe

Style: Coffee House & Bakery with friends

Astro CafeCaffeine lovers rejoice; there is a new coffee heavyweight in town.  Astro Café is the newest addition to Detroit’s burgeoning coffee house scene but stands out from the crowd by offering a little more panache than the standard affair.  The coffee is simply outstanding.

A most interesting view of Michigan Central Station (empty) accompanies the friendly chit-chat of the brewing barista.   Astro Café also boasts a fine baked goods selection including cakes, sweets and fantastic flat breads.  Also it’s good to note that ingredients are sourced locally.

Astro Café is open Tuesday through Friday from 07:30am until 6pm, Saturday 8:30am until 6pm and Sunday 9am until 5pm.

Slows BBQ

Style: Casual BBQ in Detroit

Slows BBQA Detroit Mecca since opening in 2005, Slows delivers succulent BBQ to a horde of regular, long standing clientele and a new, hipper bunch straight out of suburbia.  There is a very good reason for Slows popularity; staple BBQ including brisket, chicken wings pulled pork and ribs are devilishly tasty.  Be sure to try the potato mac and cheese side too.

The interior space has interesting décor; upcycling is in evidence everywhere.  That is if you can find your way inside of course; the voguish entrance door appears to be without handle.

The only downside of Slows resounds in its name; waits are long (up to 2 hours for a table at weekends) and service a little sluggish.  However if you’re happy to while away the hours with a drink or two at the neighbouring Sugar House, this BBQ is worth the wait.

Slows is open Sunday & Monday 11am until 10pm, Tuesday through Thursday 11am until 11pm and Friday & Saturday 11am until midnight.
