Jia Jia Tang Bao, located in the trendy Fengyang Lu shopping district, is a stalwart dumpling restaurant (xiaolongbao) that needs no virtual introduction. Its reputation, largely influenced by word of mouth, means this diminutive dumpling canteen has little need to self-promote via online social networking channels, or for that matter, within Shanghai’s glossy city guides. Founded in 1905, this superb neighborhood gem, situated on bustling Huanghe Street, has been delighting locals with bamboo-steamed pork specials for well over a Century. Today, Jia Jia Tang Bao is staffed by five friendly, native ladies, whose frenzied chatter, attentiveness and delicious fayre will make you feel right at home!
The canteen offers both a fixed and revolving specials menu, dominated by variations of soup and pork ball dumplings. Servings range from 12-24 dumpling balls – not all that filling given that they are characteristically small, light and wrapped in only a thin sheath of pastry. Folded dumplings are made from scratch, so a wait of up to 20 minutes is generally expected.
That being said, you”ll be doing yourself a favour if you rock up before 2pm, since Jia Jia Tang Bao’s acclaimed pork and shrimp variety are wont to sell out quickly. Be sure to try the succulent pork and crab dumplings with wasabi sauce – a delicious alternative to the fried variety sold at Yang’s across the street!

Lan Xin Restaurant
Style: Home-style Traditional Shanghainese
Situated on the trendy Jinxian Road in Luwan District, bijou Lan Xin Restaurant is barely distinguishable among the ramshackle shop fronts and trendy nail bars. The unimpressive white facade and thickset pleated curtains do little to herald the presence of this homely Shanghainese eatery, which has garnered an excellent reputation for its pork and bamboo soup, Tanc Cu Ying Si (pickled vegetables with black fungus) and braised duck.
More akin to a traditional Shanghainese family diner than a restaurant, Lan Xin is small, narrow and barren, save for the cheerfulness of its yellow walls and a few scattered nicknacks. Booking a day or two in advance is advisable since Lan Xin only has 5 tables and a capacity for about 18-20 people – at a squeeze.
Lan Xin specialises in traditional Shanghainese cuisine that in all honesty, can be found anywhere. The difference here is that most dishes stay true to the traditional recipe, and are cooked using fresh, organic ingredients sourced locally.
Hong Shao Rou is a popular, yet simple dish of fatty pork cuts in a sweet, dark red marinade, enhanced by the sweetness braised green peppers. Jiang Ya (braised duck leg) is equally sweet, yet benefits from the addition of soy sauce which gives it that little extra bite. The hand-printed menu doesn’t include pictures, and nor do the staff speak English, so if you are looking for something vegetarian, you’re best bet is to enlist the help of a fellow diner – they’re usually more than willing to impart a few recommendations!

A theatrical extravaganza of sequential dishes and multi-sensory experiences, Paul Pairet’s futuristic Ultraviolet Restaurant turns the very idea of conceptual dining on its head. The room, a blank canvas devoid of emotive artwork and distracting views, hides a wealth of high-end projectors, lighting rigs and wind machines vital to the table show, scheduled to begin at exactly 7:30pm. After the initial six month wait, guests meet at a predefined ‘pick-up’ point, and are subsequently bundled into black vans for transportation to an undisclosed warehouse location at the heart of Shanghai.
Guests are led in semi-darkness to a single solitary table, flanked by five chairs on either side. Once seated, the immersive culinary theatre is brought to life by the amusingly ironic opening sequence to Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Led by an extravagant “Avant-Garde” menu of 20 courses, the dining area is transformed into a 360-degree theatre of projections, including a billowing tornado of smoke and cigar ash (timed to coincide with your first bite into a foie gras cigarette), and Pop Rock Oysters, teemed with a 60’s wallpaper of music icons, brand names and 20th Century inventions. Paired with the tangy aromas of cigar smoke, earth and ocean breezes, Pairet creates a modal experience of “psycho-tasting” that could very well challenge the future of fine dining as we know it.
