It may lack the archetypal flat beach with pristine white sands, but many find the wilder Shell Beach, strewn with driftwood, boulders and silver shells is decidedly more romantic. Part-owned by French Open champion turned pop singer Yannick Noah, Do Brazil doesn’t conform to the clinical modernism of other hip venues. Although contemporary, the interior is cool and dark, offset by vast expanses of granite, oak and ebony wood, with modest picnic tables scattered along the upstairs terrace.
Do Brazil’s menu demonstrates a purity and simplicity that’s becoming all the more difficult to find among St. Barts more upscale eateries, led by traditional Caribbean influences. As the name implies, you will find a subtle nod to Brazilian influences, particularly among entrees which include Mango with Sechuan Pepper and Crab Tartar with Chorizo. Portions are exceptionally generous, so don’t be averse to sharing if you’re planning on sticking around for the main course.

He’s no newbie to the restaurant scene. In fact, Italian restaurateur Fabrizio Bianconi has already carved a niche for himself at Via Veneto, Santa Monica; attracting distinguished Hollywood guests such as Steven Spielberg and the Beckhams with his provocative Italian gourmet and white glove service. It may not have the cult celebrity following as of yet (Bianconi took the helm in April 2012), however L’Isola looks set to match Via Veneto in all but urban setting.
Housed within a pretty beachfront cottage overlooking the bobbing yachts in the harbour, L’Isola presents a romantic setting with the rustic chic of a traditional beach-hut restaurant.
Taking inspiration from the vintage luxury of a cosy Italian trattoria, L’Isola boasts a harmonious blend of dark woods and flashes of maroon, offset by the romantic glow of candlelight as the sun begins to set. Blending authentic Caribbean flavours with the pizazz of Italian gourmet, Bianconi presents a tantalizing fusion menu guaranteed to make your mouth water. Few venues can surpass the style and exclusivity of Nikki Beach, but as La Plage proves, it’s not all about looks! Situated on the shoreline at the 4-star Tom Beach Hotel, the casual beachfront bar exudes a shabby-chic appeal that you can’t help but find endearing. Unlike other painstakingly styled restaurants, it wasn’t a deliberate conception; in fact, the faded pinks and yellows of its tables are so bleached by the Caribbean sun, it’s hard to believe this was once St. Barth’s most popular party hangout. Thierry de Bradereau, a stalwart restaurateur who knows more than a thing or two about native cuisine, created La Plage with a view to promoting the island’s unique gastronomy. The result is an eclectic menu of both modern and traditional dishes, led by seafood and grilled specialties. Grilled favourites include langoustine with avocado, lobster dressed in aioli and sea bream enhanced with citrus and herbs. Equally appealing are the generous pasta dishes, infused with sweet peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, cured meats or shrimp. Le Select – a name that belies a fancy French eatery churning out upscale gourmet is in fact little more than a burger bar at the heart of Gustavia.
But then again, this is no ordinary burger bar. Opened in 1949 by Marius Stakelborough, Le Select gained notoriety for its distinctly laid back atmosphere, along with great beer and eminent clientèle ‘Gulf and Western’ singer Jimmy Buffett immortalised the modest red-brick building in his hit single “Cheeseburger in Paradise”, cementing the tiny bar’s reputation among a legion of “Parrotheads” and hippie fans who identified with the freedom and simplicity offered by this paradise idyll.
Sixty years on, Le Select still strikes that very same chord with the celebrities, surfers and free spirits who descend on St. Barths in their thousands. The menu is predominantly Gustavian, featuring simple snacks like Caribs and planteur, along with a prime choice of burgers, fries and beer.

To label Le Tamarin as quirky would be an understatement. Constructed around a Century-old Tamarin tree, this bohemian chillout zone has a distinctly magical ambience, and is often compared to the trendy pool-side bars beyond Ibiza’s golden mile. With its latticed windows, rattan-covered chairs and contrasting décor of sunset yellow and terracotta, Le Tamarin takes more than a little inspiration from vintage Morocco – although the food is anything but. The main dining room is an airy space, punctuated by swathes of white fabric and creeping vines, while the adjacent lounge area provides ample space for socialites nipping by for cocktails.
For a restaurant that prides itself on offering an unfussy, almost organic ambience, the food here is surprisingly excellent. The eclectic menu places particular emphasis upon the Gustavian staples of fish and grilled meats, although you’ll also find Asian and European influences. Locals swear by the Conch Ravioli and Mahi-Mahi Tartare, but if you’re after something lighter, there’s an excellent choice of sushi and fresh fruit salads. Thought you knew Gustavia? Enter Carol Gruson’s ultra-hip Le Ti Caribbean Tavern; the party island’s sleekest tropical hangout and home to St. Barth’s most fashionable formal restaurant since 1995. Here, chilled out trippers rub shoulders with TV personalities, and fashionistas cluster for some of the biggest runway events in the Caribbean calendar. Resplendent with dusky red velvet curtains, plenty of foliage and cherubic busts, Le Ti restaurant sets the tone for a truly glamorous evening. Tables are positioned in roped off areas, providing welcome privacy for party groups and VIPs, but the adjacent is every bit as ambient if you’d prefer a little less formality.
Chef Pascal Giglio, a local celebrity in his own right, is accredited with the strategic development of Le Ti’s menu, which ranges from casual fayre cooked on the charcoal barbecue to gourmet French-Caribbean fusion. An explosion of organic flavours and punchy contrasts, the entrée menu demonstrates Giglio’s passion for simplicity with offerings such as Breaded Calamaris in Mojo Verde Sauce and the fragrant Zen Tartare with Tuna and Lime. A breath of fresh air on an island obsessed with French-Caribbean fusion, the cheery Vietnamese eatery down on Rue Oscar II promises no end of epicurean delights.
Set within an old Swedish priest house overlooking the yacht-strewn harbour, the renovated cottage provides a humble, yet romantic setting for an evening of boundless enjoyment. As you’d expect of an archaic Asian restaurant, the décor is atypically oriental. The crisp white and yellow theme is broken up with intricate woven tapestries and exuberant paper lanterns, while jovial Chinese wooden icons add a distinctively personal touch. Lit by table lanterns and twinkling lights, the outdoor terrace is the ideal place to take in the harbour with a cold Asian beer.
Since opening in 1989, Le Vietnam (run by Chief Tuyen and his wife Angelique) has set a benchmark for Asian cuisine that even the pedigree chefs find hard to beat. Combining longtime Chinese favourites (such as pork dumplings and Peking duck) with more inspired dishes like Sautéed Chicken Curry with Coconut, Le Vietnam presents a comprehensive a la carte menu at surprisingly reasonable rates. A pit-stop for weary sightseers since 1984, Maya’s still captures the soul of St. Barths with its varied and adventurous menu.
Never ones to be content with sameness, owners Maya and Randy are resolute in their approach, maintaining an almost constantly evolving menu with plenty of fish dishes to please the veteran crowd. Jimmy Buffett is said to be a regular – hardly surprising given his penchant for the laid-back Gustavian way of life and own commercial interests. Set beneath the hills beyond the yacht harbour, Maya’s is relatively uninhibited compared to the many exclusive restaurants on St. Barts; its tranquility deliciously organic with only the soundtrack of nature on a permanent loop.
Maya’s huge outdoor patio is an unpretentious space of blonde wooden tables and canvas-backed chairs, strategically positioned to offer the best views of St. Barths shimmering harbour.
Although unintentional, this simplicity lends to an immersive dining experience; the freshness of fish and citrus dishes augmented by the salty tang of the sea air. Main courses almost always feature a choice of two fresh fish dishes (such as red snapper and Mahi-Mahi), flavourfully enhanced with a blend of fresh Asian spices and exotic fruits. If on the menu, the Filet de Boeuf comes particularly recommended; best enjoyed with a light fruity red from the excellent wine menu.

Arguably St. Barths most exclusive restaurant, Nikki Beach is where you’ll find the beautiful people daintily spearing lettuce whilst perfecting their paparazzi faces. Tucked away beside a private strip of beach with waves lapping the shoreline below, Nikki Beach’s affluent Strand Restaurant and Champagne Bar is (for mere mortals) a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Conceived by Eric Omores and Jack Penrod, The Strand is a continuation of the pristine elegance and crisp whiteness so prevalent throughout the resort. Rustic wooden tables, canopied by natural bamboo parasols, create a laid-back, distinctly Caribbean ambience, complimented by fine fusion cuisine and more bubbly than the average rock star (plus entourage) can handle!
Lauded by food purists, The Strand’s lavish fusion menu combines the delicate flavours of Asian cuisine with the distinctly boisterous colours and textures influenced by the Mediterranean. Bon vivants are treated to an experimental sushi menu, dominated by Nigiri and Funamori. Despite the obvious nod to the Mediterranean, patrons will find only two pasta dishes on the menu: one a classically spicy penne dish, and the other a variation on macaroni, served with Morchella and sprinkled lightly with cheese. Steak and chicken also feature prominently, along with Yellowtail tuna, lobster and sole.

If you’re looking for a jet-setter type exclusivity, look no further than the Eden Rock Hotel. Perched on the very edge of a rocky outcrop overlooking the shimmering Baie de St-Jean, the harbour views from On the Rocks Restaurant are truly unsurpassed. Laid out in semi-circular tiers atop an old wooden pier, the canopied restaurant boasts numerous private balconies where guests can enjoy sunset views and the ultimate VIP treatment. As the sun sets, the bay is transformed into a glittering, flood-lit tapestry of moody teals, indigo and silver – the perfect backdrop for an evening of cocktails and schmoozing with St. Barts jet-set.
Following an extensive refurbishment less than three years ago, Eden Rock called upon the services of three Michelin-starred Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten to revive its culinary offerings. Owner of the critically acclaimed Mercer Kitchen and the saving grace of New York ’s swanky Trump Hotel, Jean-Georges set about crafting an inspired fusion menu with a distinctly Caribbean edge. Appetizers such as Green Pea Soup with Parmesan Foam, Gulf Shrimp Salad (dressed with champagne and vinaigrette) and Ginger Marinated Tuna Tartare set the precedent for a truly cosmopolitan main menu, which includes Sautéed Red Snapper with Sesame Vinaigrette and the ever-popular Parmesan Encrusted Chicken with Lemon Butter and Confit Fennel.

Style: Panoramic Italian Restaurant in St. Barths
Pacri – the first restaurant on St Barth’s to import fresh supplies from Europe, is now taking up residence at the recently refurbished Taiwana hotel with the largest beach on its doorstep. With its film-set good looks and impressive views toward the outlying Caribbean islands, Flamands Bay is a romantic setting relatively untrodden by island visitors. In terms of scale, the new dining room is significantly larger than the venue of old, made all the more spacious with a pitched-beam ceiling and huge glass panels encompassing the open-plan space. A neutral theme, complimented by mahogany woods and planted orchids at each table set the precedent for a refined, yet romantic evening.
Italian authenticity prevails at Pacri, with dishes inspired by family recipes handed down to Pascal Ramette by his grandmother. Entrees comprise a variety of fusion dishes, including octopus with grilled zucchini – flown in especially from Ramette’s homeland. Puglian Buratta and Seafood Carpaccio are also firm favourites. Chef Vincenzo Arvicazo is accredited with the reinvention of Pacri’s ever-changing daily menu, taking inspiration from the classic staples of Caribbean cuisine, as well as the abundance of organic herbs and vegetables grown wild in the hills nearby. As you’d expect, there are a number of hearty pasta dishes including the seasonal Mussels alla Marinara and Truffle Ravioli enhanced with arugula, paired with a select choice of wines imported from the Veneto and Tuscany.

The Hideaway Restaurant
Style: Trendy Vintage Beach Shack
“Corked wine, warm beer, lousy food and a view of the car park…” This is Andy, the amiable ex-pat with a wry sense of humour and kicking casual restaurant now ranked among the best on the island. Its popularity is due in part to Andy’s unique approach to hospitality; he makes no bones about the kind of food on offer, so newcomers generally rock up with no real expectations. Of course, the reality is rather different. Dutifully cooking up a storm in the kitchen for well over a decade, Chef Frederic Joly (with more than a little input from Andy) created a diverse menu of simple stone-baked pizzas and seafood dishes – infused with more than a little French inspiration. Little more than a vintage beach hut with curtain-clad walls, it sets the perfect backdrop to an evening of exceptionally un-lousy food and impromptu entertainment from dinosaur rock stars.
Now approaching its 15th year anniversary, Chez Andy (or the Hideaway as it’s more formally known) continues to flog the same old horse that got it where it is today – with the exception of a brand new chef, little else has really changed. Copious seafood platters and grilled steaks continue to dominate the menu, although you’ll also find a good selection of veal (in garlic or mushroom sauce) and duck-breast, enhanced with an “oriental orange sauce”. You can also enjoy “la mer” with options like Salmon Fillet in Ginger and Lemon Cream Sauce, or St. Jacques Sea Scallops in a Provencale sauce, washed down with a bottle of plonk or trademark “warm beer”!
